NCLEX retake date calculator

Not passing is hard. This works out the earliest date you could sit the exam again, so you can plan the next few weeks with a real date in mind.

Enter your exam date to see your earliest retake date.

How the date is worked out

NCSBN's retake policy requires 45 test-free days between attempts. The calculator counts 45 days after your exam date and gives the following day as the earliest possible retake. If your board requires a longer wait, add the extra days and the date moves out to match.

The date is a planning guide. The validity dates on your new Authorization to Test are what count, and they already reflect any longer wait your board requires.

Common questions

How long do you have to wait to retake the NCLEX?

NCSBN policy requires at least 45 test-free days between attempts. Some boards of nursing require a longer wait, and your new Authorization to Test shows the dates that apply to you.

How many times a year can you take the NCLEX?

Candidates applying to a participating board can test up to eight times a year, with 45 test-free days between attempts. Some jurisdictions set stricter limits, so check with your board.

Can I register again before the 45 days are up?

You can contact your board while you wait, and NCSBN's guidance is to re-register with Pearson after you receive your official result. You cannot test until your new ATT's validity dates begin.
